How Fantasy Football Can Help You Create a Great Customer Experience

It’s fun, it’s engaging, it’s exciting--and the time is now. Fantasy football season is upon us. Now is the perfect time to start planning some fantasy football parties in your space and offer that incredible customer experience that keeps people coming back for more.

Ready to learn how you can maximize the benefits of fantasy football in your FEC or event center? Keep reading to learn more about fantasy football, why it matters, and how to create hype.

What is Fantasy Football? 

The foundation of all fantasy sports begins by selecting professional athletes for your fictional team. Then, you score points based on their statistical performance in the next real-life contest. 

The points that your selected players earn go to your team. And that determines whether you win that week’s contest against another fictional team. Simple enough, right?

We are in the Golden Age of fantasy sports, and fantasy football is king.

In 2017, 21% of of the US population was playing fantasy sports, 73% of which playing fantasy football. According to the Fantasy Sports and Gaming Association, there were an estimated 59.3 million players that year and they spent on average $556 each on league-related costs and materials.

I am entering my 7th season with the same group of friends. And each year’s league has become more elaborate with time. What began after-hours in an AT&T store has grown to a day-long draft with a huge draft board, amazing food, and a ridiculously elaborate, yearly rulebook. 

Throughout a “season,” participation from teams will begin to taper off as winning aspirations become less likely. The championship is somewhat important, but mostly to those teams that are actually involved. 

The day that every participant is the most involved is that of the “draft.” This is the key moment where seasons are won or lost, where each team “owner” gets to select which professional athletes will be on their team. This is the day and moment that your family entertainment center could and should be capitalizing on, and we’re going to go over the best ways to do that. 

The History of Fantasy Football

Fantasy football was born In the fall of 1962, in a room at the Manhattan Hotel on 700 8th Avenue, New York, NY. These founding fathers would launch the world’s first fantasy football league - the Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League, or GOPPPL. This acronym was also what they originally called the game itself. 

Over time this game would evolve in volume, name, and technology to what we know today: fantasy football.

Gone are the days of submitting rosters to a “league secretary” or stacks of paper, accidentally drafting players who have since left the league. The National Football League itself caters to the fantasy team owner with special applications and services for both television and mobile devices. They’ve created an amazing customer experience with fantasy football.

Although the name and technology improved, fantasy football as a phenomena owes it success to these sports enthusiasts. 

Why It’s Relevant to Our Industry (and What It Has to Do with Customer Experience!)

Two words: draft party. 

Event bookings are one of the most important pillars to the financial well-being of any family entertainment center.

Customer experience assures return visits for future parties (birthday, corporate, team building, etc.) as well as attendees booking their own events later on. This consistent, predictable revenue is one that you’ve hopefully spent some time working through already.

In the same vein as a birthday or corporate gathering, these drafts happen every year often on the same weekend. These draft parties are happening at home, or even virtually if no such venue can be secured.

However, not every facility is designed or catered to this demographic. For example, if you’re a soft-play center who primarily books birthday parties for 4-6 year olds, this may not be a great angle to pursue.

If you’re a facility that’s focused on more of a teenage to adult audience, on the other hand, fantasy football can help you capture a burst of 4-6 weeks worth of revenue that you may have overlooked.

Providing an amazing customer experience to this demographic could mean more for your facility than a single event.

According to the Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association, this group is “younger, better educated, with higher household incomes and more likely to have full time employment.” So, impress them! Then expect to see them return with their kids and birthday parties in the future!

How to Create Hype

The biggest drawback to this demographic can be your greatest asset. 

In my experience, draft parties and the logistics thereof can be a “last-minute” or haphazard affair.

Simply put: the summer is a busy time and we sometimes forget football is coming back so soon. There is a high likelihood that your customer hasn’t put any thought toward it or realized they could book a venue like yours.

That means you control the narrative, and it starts today. 

If this is something you’d like to do, I suggest talking with the adults visiting your location today. 

Put up signage, or other promotional materials about your location being the “One-Stop-Shop” for their next fantasy football draft party. There are no logistics involved -- you’ve got everything covered for them! 

Train your staff on what to ask customers in order to build excitement and interest. If they see an NFL logo on apparel, it is worth asking whether they play fantasy football or not. 

Make sure they know how to talk about how easy it would be to wrap the party cost into the yearly league fees. 

Put out information online, such as your website or social media channels. 

There is plenty of excitement already for fantasy sports. So, funnel that hype toward your location and event offering! Let your customers know you provide an amazing customer experience!
